RCO House 8 – David Bazen

As the architect it’s a dream
come true to have a client… …with a high level
of ambition. It’s not without reasion the
Royal Concertgebouworchestra… …is one of the worlds best
orchestras. This ambition also shows in
their architectural desires… …and their wishes for the
interior. Especially in the front and in
the monumental staircase… …the old details are
still visible. We will renovate these
parts of the building… …to it’s original state. The beauty of our organizations
is that we both share the… …passion to preserve
cultural heritage. This can be a classical music
piece by a composer… …or a Berlage design
like this building… …we both want to preserve
and share these historical… …elements for future
generations. From our point of view this
is a whole new world. The things we desire, like
studio’s, an ensemble hall… …can you make those
a reality at this location? The wishes of the
Concertgebouworchestra… …were pretty big for this
particular location. It was a very tight fit. We really had to puzzle… …to put it all in. …to put it all in.
An ensemble hall in the
existing building… An ensemble hall in the
existing building… …and the rehearsal rooms
in the newly built backside. Of course the rehearsal rooms
are very important. For each room we looked
whether the acoustics… …had to reflect
or absorb sound. Whether a room sounds
better for copper… …or for string instruments. The construction is very
important… …in particular to
prevent sound leaks… …things like this… …have to be so technically
good that… …you have no crossing of
sounds anywhere. Here on the ground level we
built a few rehearsal rooms… …like a box in a box. This means there is a
complete seperate room… …within another room. This gives incredible
sound isolation. Today we brought two
heavy sound speakers. They can produce levels
of around 120 dB. Which is louder than a
whole symphony orchestra. But we need these kind of
levels to… But we need these kind of
levels to…
…reach the other side of the
walls and do our measurements. …reach the other side of the
walls and do our measurements. We also brought a
hammer device… …the hammers fall to
the floor… …and make vibrations. I can show you… Can you see them move? We are about to move into
the building. This is an important moment.
It is almost ready for us. Together with the construction
team we made it happen… …and look what became of it… …it shines once again.
And now it’s our time to shine. I think everybody that worked
on this can be very proud… …of what it’s becoming and
what it will sound like. We will let you see and
hear it very soon.
