Could JLo’s Role in ‘Hustlers’ Land Her an Oscar Nom? | THR News

– [Ramona Voiceover] The game is rigged and it does not reward
people who play by the rules. Then it’s like robbing a bank, except you get the keys. Are you in? – Hustlers brought the heat to the Toronto International Film Festival with many buzzing that Jennifer Lopez could land her first Oscar nom
for her leading performance. The film about a group of
New York City strippers who con their wealthy clients out of thousands of dollars a night. Adapted from a 2015 New
York magazine article that went viral, stars Lopez
as veteran stripper, Ramona. – Knee hook, from here
you can do Carousel, (whistling) just switch and wrap. (whistling) – According to the
Hollywood Reporter’s review. “Not enough can be written
about how stunning Lopez is “in perhaps her best performance to date. “Far from an audacious,
real housewife type, “she represents a group of
hardworking single mothers “across America quietly struggling “to provide for their children. “It’s a nuanced depiction rarely seen “in crowd-pleasing films like this.” – [Ramona Voiceover]
These Wall Street guys, you see what they did to this country? They stole from everybody, hardworking people lost everything. – So does this mean a 2020 Oscar nom could be in Lopez’s future? THR’s awards columnist Scott Feinberg says “Obviously depending upon “what other films emerge this season, “I feel good about Lopez’s prospects, “she would be only the fifth “Latina lead actress Oscar nominee, “and wouldn’t rule out a screenplay “or even a picture nom, either, “given how much the Academy and society “has changed over the last few years. “A film by a woman, starring women, “and about women who take their fate “into their own hands
could just click with them. Speaking to THR at TIFF, Lopez noted that the sheer amount of women working on the film made it different than any other project
she’d ever done before. – Having all women on the
set, in front of the camera, behind the camera, behind the
scenes as with the producers, It’s definitely a different experience, it’s not something that
happens every day in Hollywood. I’ve done, I don’t know, 40 movies, I don’t know, something like that, and it’s never happened. It was really equal, it’s kinda like how the world should be. – Hustlers slides into
theaters on September 13th. Until next time for the
Hollywood Reporter News, I’m Tiffany Taylor. (uplifting music)
